As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, October ushers in National Home Security Month, serving as a timely reminder for homeowners to protect their homes against potential burglaries.

The Darker Nights and Rising Burglary Rates

With the end of Daylight Saving Time on Sunday, 25th October 2023, we will collectively adjust our clocks, bringing earlier sunsets and longer nights.  Unfortunately, this transition also marks the onset of a troubling trend—increased criminal activity. According to police statistics, there's a consistent 20% rise in home burglaries during the darker winter months. This alarming fact underscores the need for enhanced home security measures.

But here's the good news - with just a little effort, you can significantly bolster your home's security and deter potential burglars.

Most burglars are opportunists; they aim to gain quick access to your home without raising suspicions. Your role as a homeowner is to make this task as challenging as possible. Remember, over 70% of burglars enter homes through doors, and a lack of window locks or deadlocks on external doors makes your property six times more vulnerable.  Surprisingly, a significant number of burglaries occur because homeowners inadvertently leave their doors unlocked. In fact, one in three of us admits to this common mistake.

Eurospec British Standard 5 Lever Security Sashlock - Satin Stainless Steel

The Front Door - A Vulnerable Point of Entry

The front door is a focal point for burglaries, accounting for 5% of all break-ins due to an unlocked door.  So, let's start with a fundamental tip—always lock your doors! The type of lock on your door can make a world of difference.

Ensure all your external doors are equipped with high-quality British Standard 5 Lever Locks.  These locks are specially designed to meet home insurance requirements, boasting a robust steel body, strikeplate, and a reinforced, longer throw bolt.  They are cost-effective and straightforward to install.

If your home features a multi-point lock system, you might need to consider replacing the Euro Lock Cylinder. Opt for cylinders with a minimum of 6 pins and modern security features like anti-pick and anti-bump mechanisms. These features make it exceedingly challenging for burglars to gain unauthorised entry. If your current cylinder lacks these protective measures, it could be an easy target for professional burglars.

At More Handles, we offer an extensive range of handles and locks for doors and windows, designed to protect your property against potential threats.

How To Choose The Correct Lock For Your Bathroom Door

If there is one time a little privacy is required it’s using the bathroom or toilet.  No one likes a surprise door opening in those situations, so here we look at the best options for putting a lock on your toilet or bathroom door.

Eurospec Easi-T Bathroom lock | Types of bathroom lock guide | More Handles
Eurospec Easi-T Bathroom Lock

Door locks for privacy functions on a bathroom, toilet or even bedroom door come in a number of different options.  We are going to consider the alternative locking options and which to recommend for your bathroom door.

Sliding Door Bolt

The simplest and most traditional option is to fit a face fix sliding door bolt on to the inside face of the door that catches into a receiver on the door frame.  There are many different versions of bolt depending on how you want to match with your decor scheme.

Usually the door bolt will be contained in a metal body with a simple lever or handle to slide the bolt across the door and into the receiver.  Different receiver plates are usually supplied with the bolt to allow for different options for the bolt to be secured on the door frame or recessed into the door frame.

From the Anvil Universal Bolt | Types of bathroom lock guide | More Handles
From The Anvil Universal Bolt

In their most simple form the door bolt is only accessible on the inside of the door, which can mean that access is difficult if the door is locked and the person inside cannot unlock the door for some reason.

Some door bolts are supplied with an extra part for the outside of the door allowing you to operate the bolt from outside, often with a vacant/engaged sign included.

Bathroom Privacy Thumb-turn

This is a more modern version of a bathroom door lock that provides a more sleek integral  design instead of a simple door bolt.  Using a thumb-turn also provides the option for an emergency release to be fitted to the external face of the door allowing the lock to be opened in the case of emergency access.

Buster + Punch Bathroom turn & release and door Handle from the Cross Collection | Types of bathroom lock guide | More Handles
Buster and Punch Cross Turn and Release

If you are using door handles on a backplate then most designs offer a bathroom backplate variation where the lever is fitted at the top of the plate and an integral thumb-turn is fitted to the lower part of the plate underneath the lever handle.

This is an industry standard measurement and will fit perfectly with UK standard Mortice Bathroom Locks.

If you are using door knobs or lever door handles on a rose fitting, then a separate thumb turn and release would be used operating on a separate dead bolt lock mechanism.  Because the latch and the lock are separate they can be fitted on the door as you prefer without any restrictions on measurements.

Mortice Bathroom Lock

This is the internal lock mechanism that will need to be fitted in tot the door for the door handles to operate.  The Bathroom Lock is a large lock case with a face plate and strike plate which includes both a latch and a door bolt.  This lock has to be cut to morticed in to the edge of the door to provide a seamless and integral lock system.

The latch and the lock are then operated using standard door handles fitted on the face of the door.  The latch is operated by pressing the door handle.  A metal bar called the spindle which joins one door lever to the other side by going through the 8mm square top hole (called the follower) in the bathroom lock.

Eurospec Easi-T Bathroom lock product | Types of bathroom lock guide | More Handles
Eurospec Easi-T Residential Bathroom Lock

The door bolt to lock the door is operated by a thumb turn fitted on the face of the door.  Another smaller metal bar spindle goes through the lower 5mm square hole in the bathroom lock to operate the bolt.

The Mortice Bathroom Lock is slightly more complicated to fit due to having cut out more of the door core to accommodate the larger lock case.

Mortice Dead Bolt

A Mortice Dead Bolt is a useful alternative to the Mortice Bathroom Lock which means you do not have all the mechanics of the latch and lock in one case with predefined sizes.  They are also much easier to fit as they are so much smaller.

A Mortice Dead Bolt also separates the bolt function from the latch and so you can vary the distance measurement of where the door bolt is fixed in the door.  This can be particularly useful when fitting door knobs or door handles on a rose.

Sizes

There are a variety of different sizes available in Mortice Bathroom Locks and Tubular Deadbolts which will allow you to choose the correct distance from the edge of the door to complement your design of door handle out door knob.

Mortice Lock cases are usually either 64mm or 76mm in the UK industry standard with corresponding backset measurements of 45mm or 57mm respectively.  The backset is industry term for the distance from the faceplate of the latch to the centre of the follower.  The backset is important because it determines where the centre of the door handle or door knob sits on the face of the door.

Tubular Deadbolts come in five industry-standard lengths: 64mm, 76mm, 102mm, 127mm, and 152mm, with the corresponding industry-standard backset sizes: 45mm, 56mm, 82mm, 107mm, and 130mm.

Measuring Bathroom lock | Types of bathroom lock guide | More Handles
Architectural Quality Double Sprung Tubular Latch

To determine the right size for your door, measure the distance from the edge of the door to where you would like to fix the centre of the door handle or door knob, and  choose the backset that is closest to this measurement.

We recommend the 76mm overall latch size with the 56mm backset measurement as usually the best size for most lever handles.  However, if the door is glazed, the shorter 64mm overall size should be used to minimise the risk of hitting the glass rebate when drilling to fit the latch.

Door knobs will require a longer backset and the dead bolt can always match so that the handle and thumb-turn line up perfectly on the door face.

If you would like any further advice on choosing the right bathroom door lock then call and speak to the team at More Handles who will be able to answer your questions and make some helpful suggestions on the huge range of choices available.

Useful Guide To Replace UPVC Multi-point Door Handles On Your Front Door

Multi-point door handles, often called uPVC Door Handles, are designed to operate the modern multi-point lock systems that are often fitted to external doors.  Although they are most commonly fitted to modern UPVC and composite doors, they can also be used on timber doors that have a multi-point lock system.

The basics of measuring for multipoint & uPVC door handles:

A multi-point lock system runs the length of the door edge and will usually operate 3 or 5 different bolts to lock the door securely into the frame.  The bolts are operated by the door handle being lifted upwards to engage or shoot the bolts, and then locked with a Cylinder. This gives a very secure fitting to the door, and by using cylinders the lock itself can easily be changed as required.  However, there are some special requirements for these door handles and certain measurements are very specific, which means you cannot fit any door handle as the lock systems will vary.

More Handles sells a great range of Multi-point Door Handles in many styles and finishes to get the perfect match for your front door.  We stock from a range of high-quality manufacturers so you can be sure to get the right choice.

In this guide, we will help you understand how to measure the handles correctly to ensure you get the right one for your door.

Over time different lock manufacturers have designed lock systems using varying sizes and measurements, which does cause some confusion, so please do not assume your lock will fit every door handle.

The first thing to establish are some key measurements that must match exactly to the lock system on your door.

PZ Centre Measurements

Sometimes called the PZ measurement (although no-one seems to know why!), this is the distance between the centre of the door handle lever and the centre of the round part of the cylinder.

uPVC Door Handles at More Handles

SKUs: 1B000/1B001 (Black/White) | Both £13.01 INC. VAT

This measurement will usually be either 92mm or 70mm.  Over the years the 92mm system has become themes popular, but the 70mm is still commonly used.  Other measurements also exist, but they are unusual and therefore will limit the choice of door handle designs available.

If you are still at the point of specifying your lock system we recommend using a 92mm PZ Centre Measurement to give you the most choice in the market for the door handles.

Fixing Centre Measurements

The second important measurement is the distance between the centre of the fixing screws.  This can also vary depending on the lock system, but must be an exact match for your door handle to fit.  There is always a fixing screw at the bottom of the plate, and some have a second fixing hole under the lever, others at the top of the plate.

Do not be tempted to drill new holes in your door to match as you risk drilling through the lock mechanism inside the door.

Backplate Width

The third measurement to understand is the width of the backplate.  These doorhandles are usually supplied on a narrow plate, this is intentionally designed to allow room for the large frame that often secures the door, and the narrow width of many UPVC designs.

Most designs of the door handle will be able to fit, but still an important measurement for you to check as some can be too wide.

Design

Once you have checked all the measurements on your lock system you can begin to define your search and choose from the many designs available.  There is always the popular white powder coated handles to match the UPVC doors, they do not stand out and last very well in external conditions.

However, lots of manufacturers have brought new and interesting designs to the market in recent years allowing you to choose a range of finishes in brass, bronze, steel, black, chrome.

The choices now available also allow you to use a much more traditional lever design.  This is great if you are updating an older property, or want to choose a coordinated theme with the other handles in the property.

There are some excellent options by manufacturers like From The Anvil Multi Point Door Handles that combine traditional designs with modern technology.

Always remember that fitting door handles externally means they will be subject to the British weather, and some of the value ranges - especially in lacquered brass may begin to show signs of wear after a while.  Other finishes may require regular cleaning to maintain their look.

Security

The main reason for choosing a multi-point lock handle is the security, so just some reminders for you.

Some handles have excellent security designs that include an armoured section around the cylinder to add further protection like the Eurospec Prosecure Handle.

uPVC Door Handles at More Handles

Using a multi-point lock system is great for security peace of mind, but is actually only as secure as the cylinder you fit into the lock.  When fitting on external doors, you should always ensure the cylinder is a British Standard quality with minimum 6 Pin system, and additional security features.  If an insufficient cylinder is used then unfortunately you could be at risk of simple lock snapping techniques, and potentially uninsured as a result.

Lock Cylinders should always be measured carefully to ensure they do not protrude through the handle backplate.  You can see our other blogs 'How To Replace A Euro Lock Cylinder’ for more details on this.

Reminders

Just a few final words of advice to ensure that your multipoint door handles fit perfectly.

Please measure carefully from the centre to the centre.  Your measurement should always be read in millimetres to be sure of the correct distance.

If you are replacing existing handles then you may also want to keep the spindle from the old handles as this may already have been cut to the required width for your door.

Useful Guide To Replace A Door Knocker On Your Front Door

The door knocker is a beautiful and traditional piece of hardware that can really add a statement piece to your external door. We live in the days of video door bells remotely advising you of who is at the door, but they cannot complete the design of your front entrance to really add the all important kerb-appeal to your home.

Blu Performance Ring Door Knocker 316 Stainless Steel

More Handles sells a great range of Door Knockers in many styles and finishes to get the perfect match for your front door.  Here we give you the ultimate guide to how to fit a door knocker to your front door.

1 - Establish what kind of door you have.  Metal doors and some composite doors are not suitable for face-fix door knockers as the doors are hollow inside and the fixings have no purchase.  These type of doors require a bolt-through fixing method.

Timber doors and other solid construction doors are suitable for both face-fix and bolt-through door knockers.

2 - Door Knockers will be supplied with the correct fixings for either face-fix or bolt through, and sometimes with a separate strike plate.

Fab'n'Fix Face Fix Door Knocker

Face-Fix.  Either with decorative visible screws into the door, or a concealed fixing plate is screwed on to the face of the door and the Face-fix Door Knocker is applied to the fixing plate.

Bolt-Through.  Supplied with M6 bolts that require a hole to be drilled through the door.  A decorate bolt head often domed and in a matching finish, secures the bolt on the side of the door.  Other decorative bolt covers can al so be purchased to hide the bolts.

Carlisle Brass Door Knocker on Rose

3 - Always drill pilot holes before completing the face fix application.  A neat solution as there are no visible bolts on the inside of the door.

4 - The M6 bolts will be a standard size to suit a 44mm thick door.  If you have a different thickness of door you may require longer bolts or to cut the standard ones.

This should be job for the basic DIYer, and with just a few minutes work you can have a real statement door knocker shining like new on your door.

What Is a Tubular Latch?

The Tubular Latch is a simple closing device commonly used on internal doors where no lock is needed.  The Tubular Mortice Latch is an evolution from a Mortice Lock, downsized so that it can be fitted with much less effort, and with minimal drilling and cutting to the door required. This guide is to help with How to Choose the right tubular latch.

The Tubular Latch is available in various sizes and variations to suit your doors. Typically they are manufactured with a mild steel latch-body with a short faceplate, a brass or steel tongue, and an 8mm follower. (The follower is the square hole where the spindle joining the door handles passes through the latch.)

Commonly supplied with square edges to the faceplate and strikeplate, however also available with radius edges which are often preferred by the manufacturing joiners who will use a router to pre-cut the holes in the door. For us mere mortals who use a chisel then the square edges are easier!

Latch Finishes

There is a wide choice of finishes available for the forend and strikeplates meaning that the latches can be coordinated perfectly with your door handles and hinges.

The cheaper economy latches are usually either Nickel Plated or Electro Brass Plated.

The better quality latches have a range of finishes in Polished Brass, Polished Steel, Satin Steel, Florentine Bronze, Power Coat Black and more!

Latch Length & Backset sizes

How to choose the right tubular latch. The Tubular Latch Sizes come in five industry-standard lengths: 64mm, 76mm, 102mm, 127mm, and 152mm. This is the measurement of the overall length of the latch case. Each of these sizes has its own unique ‘Backset' measurement.  The Backset is the distance from the faceplate of the latch, to the centre of the follower (The follower is the square hole where the spindle goes through the latch.) The size of the Backset is important because it will determine where your handle or knob sits on the face of the door. The industry standard Backset sizes are: 45mm, 56mm, 82mm, 107mm and 130mm. So the following rule generally applies:

Latch size 64mm = 45mm backset

Latch size 76mm = 56mm backset

Latch size 102mm = 82mm backset

Latch size 127mm = 107mm backset

Latch size 152mm = 130mm backset

How to measure what latch size I need

An easy way to choose which tubular latch you need is to measure from the edge of your door to the centre of your door Stile (The stile is the vertical edge section of your door). Choose the Backset which is closest to this measurement. This means your handle will be as central as possible to the Stile on your door.  We generally recommend that a 76mm overall latch size is ordinarily the best size for most lever handles. However the shorter 64mm overall size should be used where the door is glazed, to minimize the risk of hitting the glass rebate when drilling to fit the latch.

The larger sizes of latch are usually used for Door Knob furniture.  We would usually recommend using the 102mm (4”) Tubular Latch or larger for a door knob, but the 76mm (3”) can be used as an absolute minimum.  It is best to try and set the door knob further away from the door frame, as when a door knob is fitted too close to the door frame, (such as on a 64mm, or sometimes a 76mm latch) your fingers will become trapped between the knob and frame each time you open the door, which is very inconvenient and often painful!  For this reason, door knobs are often fitted into the mid-rail on panelled doors, so that a longer latch can be fitted, which will also look more traditional.

Bolt-Through Fixing Holes

Most Tubular Latches, with the exception of the Economy range, are supplied with Bolt-Through Fixing Holes.  These are the holes in the latch case located on either side of the Follower.  These Fixing Holes are designed to allow the fixing bolts, which are often supplied with door handles, to pass through the door and the latch mechanism so that the handles can be bolted together.  The hole at the rear of the Latch is just a cutaway to the rear of the case.

Heavy and Double Sprung Tubular Latches

Choose the right tubular latch. There are several levels of quality available in a Tubular Latch, ranging from economy to high-end architectural quality. The economy and standard Tubular Latches are suitable for light use only and are commonly used by housebuilders and tradesmen.  They will work with most standard sprung lever handles, however after some amount of use, they may begin to squeak and scratch, and may ultimately fail.  We do not recommend the Economy or Standard Tubular Latches are used with door knobs.

We usually try and recommend the Double Sprung Tubular Latch (ZTLKA) for most applications. The Double Sprung Latch is still within an affordable price range, but is built with far superior components to the Economy latches. The term 'Double Sprung' means that the latch has a separate soft spring for the tongue action, allowing a gentle closing action to the door. The follower works on a separate spring with a heavy action, to ensure that heavy levers and unsprung door knobs are always returned to the horizontal position.  It also has a wide range of sizes which make it the ideal choice for fitting door handles or knobs.

This latch comes as standard with a quality, removable Forend which acts as a guide for the Latch Tongue to improve the action.  Also supplied is a Strike Plate with a black plastic Dust Box to neaten the appearance and conceal unsightly chisel marks into the door frame.  The Strike Plate has a small adjustable plate that ensures that the Latch Tongue is held securely.  These are only little details, but make all the difference!

The Heavy Sprung Architectural Tubular Latch is the strongest latch in our range.  Again the latch closes very softly but has a more powerful spring to return the handle or knob.  This is ideal when fitting handles or knobs that are unsprung, and particularly useful when using exceptionally heavy hardware, such as solid stainless steel levers or solid brass or bronze door knobs.  This Tubular Latch is the highest quality latch we offer, and also comes as standard with a quality, removable Forend and Strike Plate, and a black dust box.

How To Fit A Tubular Latch

See this helpful guide from Ultimate Handyman on how to fit a latch.

NOTE: Remember to ensure that the hole drilled for the latch is large enough to allow space for the latch mechanism to operate correctly.  If the hole is too narrow and the Latch only just fits inside, then the case body can be compressed and particularly the spring mechanism, which means over time the spring will fail and the latch will stop working.  Make sure that the hole allows a couple of mm spare around the latch case.

If you are in any doubt when trying to choose the right tubular latch for your application, just give us a call and one of the Ironmongery Specialists at More Handles will be glad to assist in recommending the correct latch for you.

We get asked every week; 'What is the difference between nickel and chrome and which should I choose?' It is difficult trying to understand the differences just by looking at images on a website, so this short blog helps you see the difference between chrome and nickel and which finish you should choose.

PolishPed Chrome

Polished Chrome

Polished Chrome

Chrome Plating is applied to a base metal and then given a very high polish to provide a beautiful highly reflective mirror smooth finish.

The colour of Polished Chrome Door Handles is a stunning reflective surface giving a very clean, almost white finish, and should give you a perfect reflection.

The look of Polished Chrome hardware is generally considered to be very modern and would suit a contemporary design theme very well.

Polished Nickel

Polished Nickel

Nickel Plating is again applied to a base metal and polished to a high shine.  The colouring has a more yellow, deeper and richer tone than the Polished Chrome Finish.

Many people refer to it as looking like traditional sterling silver.  The warmer tones of Polished Nickel lend themselves to a more traditional, classic design to the decor, and we think are perfectly suited to the Handmade English Kitchen look.

So which finish should you choose Polished Chrome or Polished Nickel?

Chrome Door Handles are a very popular choice for modern door handles, especially the contemporary European style Lever On Rose designs.  Many Kitchen Cupboard Handles and Knobs are also supplied in Polished Chrome, this can be very useful to allow you to match the finish of your door furniture across the ranges.

Of course, fashions change in ironmongery as they do in most things and it seems that "chrome is the new brass". We find many customers are replacing their brass fittings with chrome, and as such the manufacturers are providing a wide choice fo designs in the Polished Chrome finish.

It is also useful that Polished Chrome is essentially the same finish regardless of which manufacturer you choose, so you don't have the worry about whether everything will match or not!  This may influence your decision if you are trying to match up with other chrome fittings in your property such as light switches or bathroom furniture.

Polished Nickel is not so readily available and therefore remains a little more exclusive.  Exclusive is good - not everyone will have it, but as you might guess it will cost a little more.  We are noticing a trend developing for the top-end kitchens to choose the warmer Polished Nickel Cupboard Handles, and while they are more expensive, they tend to be a better quality handle or knob, often made in the UK from solid brass and then Nickel plated and polished.  One of our favourites is the Quantock Cup Handle in Polished Nickel, a firm favourite of the hand made English Kitchen designers.

We will finish with a few more contrasting images of polished nickel vs chrome to help you get more of an idea. However if you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our door handle nerds at More Handles HQ and we will be happy to help.

PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition

All very technical sounding, but basically PVD means a thin coating or film is applied to the solid metal base. The coating is invisible and so does not change the look and feel of the metal, but creates an incredibly hardwearing finish. A perfect solution therefore for high quality door furniture and architectural ironmongery is the range by Alexander & Wilks.

There are major advantages in specifying your door handles and hardware with a PVD coating. The finish remains as good as it looked when you first opened the box! These Door Handles are sometimes referred to as Stainless Brass or Everbrite, referencing the long lasting nature of this quality finish.

No special cleaning is required for these Door Handles. They are maintenance free and will simply require a gentle wipe over periodically with a warm soapy cloth and then dried.

PVD Door Furniture is particularly useful when fitting items externally. When fitted outside brass and metal door handles are exposed to the elements and weather, and over time this will cause the finish to deteriorate. This is especially the case with standard lacquered brass, or plated metal finishes.

This kind of Door Hardware is the perfect choice to fit outside as it can easily with stand the moisture and acidic elements in the atmosphere. It is an excellent choice for coastal areas, as this kind of Door Furniture can even withstand the salty sea air, which rapidly corrodes other metal finishes.

PVD Door Furniture from Alexander & Wilks carries a 25 Year Finish Guarantee

PVD Door Furniture from Alexander & Wilks carries a 25 Year Finish Guarantee. We can offer this lifetime guarantee as the PVD finish is extremely durable, and prevents the common issues of tarnishing, rust and lacquer breakdown that often effect brass and metal handles.

The new door handles, cupboard handles and door hardware from Alexander & Wilks uses a high quality Physical Vapour Deposition coating to create a beautiful, hard wearing and long lasting finish. The Alexander & Wilks PVD Door Hardware range is available in a choice of different finishes and colours, but most have the special coating applied.

Satin Brass PVD Crispin Knurlee Cabinet Handle at More Handle
Satin Brass PVD
Polished Nickel PVD
Alexander & Wilks AW200
Dark Bronze PVD

Some companies only apply this coating to their external door hardware, but Alexander & Wilks have taken the bold step of adding this high quality finish to PVD Cupboard Handles and other Door Ironmongery that has internal applications.

This means the Alexander & Wilks PVD Doorstops, Alexander & Wilks PVD Bathroom Thumbturn & Release, and Alexander & Wilks PVD Escutcheons all match perfectly in the same Physical Vapour Deposition finish. This allows you to create a perfectly coordinated look around the house on all the ironmongery, and the confidence of knowing that you have fitted the very best durable and beautiful products.

The PVD - Physical Vapour Deposition coating is just part of the commitment from Alexander & Wilks to create the best quality ironmongery available. The beautiful Spitfire Knurled Lever on Round Rose is a great example which is made with the 25 Year PVD finish, and we really love the design of this handle. The special finish highlights the textures of the machine knurled grip and creates a stunning tactile finish.

Various different industries use PVD applications from spectacles and windows, to computer chips and even NASA - Well if its good enough for them, its good enough for the new Alexander & Wilks Door Handles Collection!

If you would like to specify your door hardware with the 25 year guaranteed Alexander & Wilks PVD finish, and elevate your ironmongery with this space-age technology, then please contact one of the team at More Handles who will be pleased to talk you through the different options available.

You can then fit it and forget it for the next 25 years!

Architectural Ironmongery can be a confusing place - filled with different terminology and jargon that can quickly become confusing. The More Handles ‘How To’ guides series of articles aims to break down the jargon, and explain the differences between similar items where confusion can easily occur. This article features a series of annotations and footnotes, aimed at explaining some architectural terms. Use this article to discover, what is a tubular latch?
You will find the annotations at the bottom of the page, and they are marked with the following symbols: *, **, †, ‡, §, ‖, ¶ ☞

What is a Tubular Latch?

A tubular latch is an item of ironmongery which is usually morticed* into a door, which allows the door to be opened and closed by means of a Door Handle or Door Knob. The word ‘latching’ is the act of a door being closed, and remaining held shut. The door latch is one of the most important pieces of hardware there is, and we’re going to take a look at the most common types of tubular latch available, and outline what latch you should use in various situations. We hope to help you choose the right tubular latch for your door.

The Tubular Latch is without doubt, the most common type of door latch on the market today. The tubular latch is usually a rectangular steel tube, which at its most simple contains a spring-loaded follower** and latchbolt or ‘tongue’ of triangular metal at the end, which retracts to open the door, and springs back to close or ‘latch’ the door and keep it closed. The tubular steel casing makes the tubular latch very simple to fit -often with one single drilled hole, eliminating the extensive joinery work with a jig or chisel needed to fit larger latch or lock cases. For this reason the tubular latch has become a favourite of Joiners and DIY enthusiasts alike. The simple tubular latch is available in a staggering variety of different sizes, shapes, and quality levels. Often overlooked as a minute detail within a project, we recommend that some level of consideration should be given to what type of tubular latch you use, because it is the item that has the largest single effect on the operation of your new door handles. We sell four levels of quality in the tubular latch.

Economy Tubular Latch | How to choose the correct Latch | More Handles

The Economy Tubular Latch is cheap, and to be frank, its benefits end there.

Often used in budget and council projects, the economy tubular latch is a one-piece latch with a fixed-on faceplate. It comes with a basic keep for the doorframe. The economy tubular latch should only be used when on an extreme budget, and the lifespan of a latch like this is not likely to exceed more than 10,000 cycles, so is not a permanent solution.

The Standard Tubular Latch is the next step up from the budget latch. It has the same basic components, but the build quality is higher.

This type of latch is used most commonly by house builders and developers on large projects, where cost is still a major deciding factor. This item features holes to accept bolt through fixings () so can be used with lever-on-rose door handles. The standard latch will last longer than the economy tubular latch, but is still not recommended for maximum quality, smooth operation, and longevity.

Standard Tubular Latch | How to choose the correct Latch | More Handles
Double Sprung Tubular Latch | How to choose the correct Latch | More Handles

The Double Sprung Tubular Latch is our recommended latch for most projects. It is very good quality and will provide many years of smooth operation.

The term 'double sprung' means the latch has a separate spring for the tongue action, which allows a super soft close to the door. A separate spring on the spindle follower with a heavy action spring ensures that levers are always returned to the horizontal position.

This Tubular Latch is a great choice for either lever handles or door knobs, benefiting from many features such as dust-box to tidy up the chisel marks behind the receiver keep plate, a secondary removable fore end which is easily removed when the door is painted, a hardened steel follower, a precision-guided latch-bolt, and the heavy dual-spring system.

This item is an excellent choice for use with Door Knobs, as it is available in lengths up to 150mm. We recommend a minimum Backset (‡) of 82mm or more when using these latches with Door Knobs, to avoid any risk of scraped knuckles on the door frame.

The Heavy Sprung Tubular Latch is the strongest latch in our range. The heavy sprung latch comes with all of the benefits of the double-sprung tubular latch, but has a more powerful return spring inside the casing. The latch closes very smoothly but has a powerful spring return.

This is highly recommended when fitting handles or door knobs that are unsprung (§) or particularly heavy. We always recommend the Heavy Sprung Tubular Latch so that the heavy or unsprung lever is always returned to a horizontal position, rather than drooping downwards.

How to Measure a Door Latch

Now let’s take a look at tubular latch sizing. The Tubular Latch is available in a confusing array of sizes, for example, you can purchase our Double Sprung Tubular Latch in lengths of 64mm, 76mm, 102mm, 128mm, and 152mm. One of the most common questions we get asked as specialists is; ‘’Why so many sizes of latch, and which size do I need?” Well, these different sizes relate to the length of the latch, and this length basically means how deep the latch needs to be morticed into the door. This basically determines where your door handle will be positioned on the face of the door. If you have old doors and you’re replacing existing latches, you will likely want to determine what size you already have so you can match it, and save yourself some remedial joinery work. If you have new doors, you need to make a decision on what size of tubular latch you need.

To do this, you need to take a few factors into account. If you’re going for lever door handles, whether they are lever-on-backplate style, or lever-on-rose, we recommend you look at the 76mm Tubular Latch. A lot of people (and even some builders and joiners) default to the smallest size latch at 64mm, however on almost all doors, the slightly longer 76mm latch works much better aesthetically. Using the 76mm latch will give you a 56mm Backset, and that usually places the lever handle nicely in the centre of the Door Stile (‖). The exception to this rule is where a situation in which you may have a narrow door stile, and large glass panels within the door. In this case, it is prudent to use the smaller, 64mm size of tubular latch, in case of fouling (and cracking) the glass panel. You can take a quick measurement to determine for sure what size latch you need. Do this by measuring the width of your door stile, and halving the measurement you have taken. That will give you size of Backset you need to get to position your handle in the centre of the door stile.

So, if the general rule for Lever Handles is to choose the 76mm size tubular latch, then what about if you’re going to choose Door Knobs? Again, a common misconception (even, surprisingly within the building trade) is that the 76mm latch should be used, across the board, with Door Knobs. This is not the case. 76mm is the absolute minimum size that can be used with Door Knobs, but in some cases, even the 76mm is too short. So, why is this? The answer is, if the Door Knob is set on too short a latch, it will be much too close to the door frame. The turning action required to operate a Door Knob always requires a person’s knuckles to rotate, and end up between the Door Knob and the door frame. If the latch is too short, you will find that your knuckles get stuck in the small gap between Door Knob and door frame. This can be exceptionally painful and inconvenient! At More Handles we recommend that wherever possible when using Door Knobs, you should use a latch that is at least 102mm. (4”) This will give a backset of 82mm, and will allow sufficient room for the Door Knob to be properly operated, it also looks far better aesthetically, too.

This brings us to our next point, which is, at what height should a tubular latch be positioned on the door? Many joiners are taught that one metre from the floor is the correct height at which to position a latch and door handle. Whilst this is correct for Lever Handles, it is not necessarily the case for Door Knobs. When using panelled doors, the Door Knob should always be positioned on the Mid Rail, (also called the Lock Rail) regardless of what height the Mid Rail is from the floor. The reason for this is both aesthetic and practical – If the Door Knob is set on the door stile one metre from the floor, then you can only use a 64mm or 76mm latch, which as discussed, is not advisable. If the Door Knob is set on the Mid Rail, then a much longer latch, up to 152mm (6”) can be used. Using a longer latch in this way works much better as it gives more than ample space to operate the Door Knob, and also looks proportionally far superior on any door.

The above covers pretty much everything you need to know about choosing a tubular latch. All of our Tubular Latches are supplied as standard with a matching fore end, strike plate, and fixing screws, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing any of these items separately.

Now, we have covered the Tubular Latch in detail, we will take a brief look at the other latch types you may encounter whilst renovating your home, working on interior design, or working on a building or joinery project.

Flat upright latch | How to choose the correct Latch | More Handles

The Flat (or upright) Latch is a Latch that is housed in a square or rectangular casing, rather than a tube. These latches were used more commonly in the 1970’s and 80’s, when the Tubular Latch was not the standard and preferred door latch. Due to the casing, the process of fitting a Flat latch requires more joinery work, rather than a single bore hole. It is for this reason that the Flat Latch has largely fallen out of favour with joiners and builders. One current use for Flat Latches is, some doorset (¶) manufacturers will use a single lock jig across their doors, for both locks and latches, for speed and non-complication purposes. For this reason it benefits them to have locks and latches that have the same sized case.

Sashlock | How to choose the correct Latch | More Handles

The Sashlock is a combination of both Lock and Latch contained within the same casing, which is usually rectangular. The Sashlock is a very common item in Architectural ironmongery due to its versatility. You will find different grades of quality, and different lock and key profiles to suit almost all applications. Some of our Sashlocks are suitable for internal use only, and some are rated for use in external security applications, such as on a front door. Some Sashlocks come with a cutout for a Euro Cylinder. Finally, the Bathroom Lock uses the same basic assembly and layout as the Sashlock except with a follower for a thumbturn & release, rather than a keyhole cutout.

The Rim Latch, or Rim Lock, is a very traditional piece of ironmongery, which has been used on doors for hundreds of years. It is fixed to the face of a door, rather than Morticed inside it, and as such is much more simple to fit. Rim Latches are often seen in old Georgian and Victorian houses, and are used often in restoration projects.

DIN latch DIN is a German institute for standardisation | How to choose the correct Latch | More Handles

The DIN Latch uses a very long casing, to allow for much greater distance between the follower and keyhole cutout, or bathroom turn follower. DIN is the German institute for standardization, and this has been rolled out as the European standard. As such, you will find DIN locks on many doors across Europe. The DIN standard is used by many doorset manufacturers, so it is advantageous to them to use a the standard DIN sized casing even on doors which require only a latch.

Night latch | How to choose the correct latch | More Handles

Finally the Night Latch is an item that has been used primarily on British front doors for the last 100 years. The Night Latch uses a rim-mounted case and a Rim Cylinder, which when the door closes, locks the door automatically. The Night Latch can be left ‘on the latch’, usually by pulling a lever, and this will leave the door unlocked even if closed. The Night Latch is loved and hated in equal measure, chiefly because of its automatic locking feature. This can be convenient as it means no locking process when leaving the house is necessary, but can also lead to people being locked out of their homes very easily, sometimes by as little as a gust of wind. It should be noted that a Night Latch alone is never enough in the security department. The Night Latch should always be used in conjunction with a secondary Kitemarked (☞) British Standard Security Deadlock.
